Upfront, I want to declare that I am not directing my comments to any particular political party or philosophy. I really don't care if you are Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative or any label you might pin on yourself. It just doesn't matter.
The behavior of our politicians and government officials over the last number of months and years has led me to a place that I really don't want to be. I don't believe a word any of them utter. I am uncomfortable with this belief but I have to be honest with myself, it is there.
I come to this position by listening and paying attention. I don't have to put words in their mouths or manufacture scenarios regarding their actions. They have supplied all the ammunition I needed. I have come to the conclusion that our government, government officials and politicians are adrift on an ocean of irresponsibility and dishonesty. The facts speak for themselves; lets look at a couple:
-No federal budget has been enacted for several years as required by law.
-Programs fail and/or fail to meet projected expectations.
-People are hurt and security is lost yet the societal train just keeps chugging down the track.
Think of your own subject: healthcare, failure to locate weapons of mass destruction, Benghazi or the IRS perhaps. Now examine the actions of the principal players involved. Did anyone step forward and assume responsibility? Was a price paid by anyone? Was "finger pointing" at the "other side" the most prominent response?
Is there anything that I can do? Maybe. I will state here that I am a member of the Boomer Generation (circa 1949). I believe that our generation has been blessed with more opportunities and advantages than any other generation. Our blessings are unparalleled in history. I believe we therefore have a corresponding obligation.
As a generation perhaps it is time to expect and demand more accountability from our government in the form of honesty and responsibility. Representing the common good not merely the interests of their core constituency. Admitting without excuse when they are wrong.
As a generation we might be able to make a start. We have been blessed. It doesn't mean we don't have burdens to carry as individuals, we all do. But we must live our lives intentionally. In fact, we have a responsibility to do such. We as individuals need to examine who we are and where we are in life; how we are living our lives and what can we do to make our lives fulfilling, responsible and meaningful. If we live intentionally as a generation, we might just affect not only our national leaders but also generations yet to come. Responsibility and honesty are valuable characteristics to possess.
