A SENIOR CHOICE!

We seniors all have choices.  We can elect to lead a sedentary life style, satisfied with little activity or involvement with friends, family or society.  There is nothing wrong with this life-style.,  Many choose this life and are very satisfied.  Good for them.  It is their right and they should not be criticized, judged or belittled.  They have earned the right to select the life-style and activity level that pleases them.
I, in turn, have chosen something different.  I am following a path of more involvement and activity with family, friends and society in general.  I too have earned this right and should not be judged or criticized.  I do want to make something clear:  I am not trying to be "young" again.  I have been young and enjoyed it immensely.  I am 64 years old now and do not consider myself "old".  I have no intention of leading a sedentary life-style or giving into societal expectations that I will go quietly to the senior living community and behave myself as a good elder man should.
I have much to give, to experience and to learn about life.  I plan to investigate many different avenues to improve my spirituality, health and understanding of how to live a fulfilling life.  I have partaken in Reiki, Tai Chi, exercise at a health club and many other things.  All have value and, if I continue, will provide valuable benefits.  I go to my doctor for regular check-ups and generally follow his advice.
I recently did something that I never thought I would do.  I went to see a dietician to learn more about diet and how it affects how I feel and the energy level I want to acquire.  Many of us have weight considerations or medical conditions that affect how we feel and how we can live our lives.  I found this to be true in my case.  I had asked my doctor and searched the internet looking for hints, clues or ideas on how I might fashion a dietary plan that would address my needs.  I actually did take steps based upon my research but I wasn't getting the results I expected.
I was in a local supermarket and noticed a sign that introduced a store based dietician available to the public.  Putting aside my pride, I decided to investigate.  I called the number indicated and spoke with Sydney.  She gave me a time for an appointment and e-mailed to me a questionnaire to fill out and return which was not lengthy but addressed my general health and what concerns I had.  I followed instructions, completed the questionnaire and returned by e-mail.
The appointment time arrived and I met Sydney in her office in the store.  We had a frank discussion about my health, diet and concerns.  She was attentive, involved and enthusiastic.  What I learned was that many of my ideas based upon my research and life experiences were contraindicated for what I was trying to achieve.  I wanted to gain some weight and have more energy.  The diet I was following would do just the opposite.  It was a healthy diet but not one that would produce the desired results.
She educated me regarding my diet and life-style.  I was given handouts with suggested foods and food groups to include and exclude from my regular diet.  I was walked around the store and she made specific suggestions that would enhance my dietary goals.  It was very pleasant and she further followed up with subsequent e-mails with further suggestions.
I have to admit that it was a lesson well learned for me.  I knew that diet was an important component if I was going to achieve the life-style goals I desired.  I tried on my own and failed.  I didn't have the knowledge to get where I wanted to go.  I was fortunate that I pocketed my pride and sought help from a professional.  I am not always good at this but I am very happy that I am still learning and that I did follow through.  It was not an expensive proposition and it did benefit me greatly.

A SENIOR CALL TO ACTION!

As I sit down to write this post, I do so with a bit of trepidation.  I have no doubt about the subject matter at hand.  My thoughts and beliefs are clear.  What I don't want to do is appear to advise, preach or advocate.  I am just noting my observations and the effect these observations have had on me.
Upfront, I want to declare that I am not directing my comments to any particular political party or philosophy.  I really don't care if you are Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative or any label you might pin on yourself.  It just doesn't matter.
The behavior of our politicians and government officials over the last number of months and years has led me to a place that I really don't want to be.  I don't believe a word any of them utter.  I am uncomfortable with this belief but I have to be honest with myself, it is there.
I come to this position by listening and paying attention.  I don't have to put words in their mouths or manufacture scenarios regarding their actions.  They have supplied all the ammunition I needed.  I have come to the conclusion that our government, government officials and politicians are adrift on an ocean of irresponsibility and dishonesty.  The facts speak for themselves; lets look at a couple:

-No federal budget has been enacted for several years as required by law.
-Programs fail and/or fail to meet projected expectations.
-People are hurt and security is lost yet the societal train just keeps chugging down the track.

Think of your own subject: healthcare, failure to locate weapons of mass destruction, Benghazi or the IRS perhaps.  Now examine the actions of the principal players involved.  Did anyone step forward and assume responsibility?  Was a price paid by anyone?  Was "finger pointing" at the "other side" the most prominent response?
Is there anything that I can do?  Maybe.  I will state here that I am a member of the Boomer Generation (circa 1949).  I believe that our generation has been blessed with more opportunities and advantages than any other generation.  Our blessings are unparalleled in history.  I believe we therefore have a corresponding obligation.
As a generation perhaps it is time to expect and demand more accountability from our government in the form of honesty and responsibility.  Representing the common good not merely the interests of their core constituency.  Admitting without excuse when they are wrong.
As a generation we might be able to make a start.  We have been blessed.  It doesn't mean we don't have burdens to carry as individuals, we all do.  But we must live our lives intentionally.  In fact, we have a responsibility to do such.  We as individuals need to examine who we are and where we are in life; how we are living our lives and what can we do to make our lives fulfilling, responsible and meaningful.  If we live intentionally as a generation, we might just affect not only our national leaders but also generations yet to come.  Responsibility and honesty are valuable characteristics to possess.

AN ALTERNATIVE PATH!

I like to share with readers some experiences that have influenced my life, for better or worse.  As a member of the boomer generation, I find that my interest in health and spirituality have greatly increased.  I think that this increased interest has its roots in how I view myself and my needs as I age.  I do not view myself as "old" or "elderly".  I do recognize and accept my age, physical condition, limitations and financial condition.  To ignore these facts would be foolish.  I don't, however, think that my best years are behind me, believe that my future is limited or that my life is spinning out of control, unable to be influenced and directed by me.

I have looked into many traditional methods of addressing my health and spirituality.  I go to my physician for regular check-ups, I attend weekly services at the church of my choice and I try to watch what I eat in hopes that I will improve my health.  All these things are good but is there more I might investigate? I found that there are many other avenues I can pursue if I am interested in expanding my experiences and improving my life.

A number of years ago, I became acquainted with Reiki.  If you are not familiar with Reiki let me say that it is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that further promotes healing.  It is administered by laying hands and is based on the belief that a life force energy flows through us.  The belief is that if the life force energy is low we are not in a position to enjoy our lives as sickness, depression, etc. influence our lives in a negative way.  Conversely, if our life force energy is high we are more capable of being happy and healthy.  It is believed that this energy is a spiritually based life force energy.  If you want more information regarding Reiki, the internet is full of articles and opportunities to learn.

But my purpose here is not to educate you about Reiki.  My intent is to share my experiences.  For periods of time over the last fifteen years, I have been very involved in receiving Reiki treatments and administering Reiki treatments (I have obtained a Second Degree Reiki Practitioner status).  During these periods, I have experienced above average (for me) peace and contentment in my life.  I have felt better and enjoyed life more.  But, and there is always a but in my life, I often find myself drifting away from Reiki and my life isn't quite as good.  I always have reasons and excuses for my lack of dedication.  I am too busy, too tired, too whatever!  It doesn't matter as the real reason is that I fail to follow through on what I have found to be a beneficial practice.

I now arrive at the heart of my post today.  If I want a life that is fulfilling and passionate, exciting and meaningful, then I must not fail to pursue new paths and adventures.  Reiki and Tai Chi are two paths that have proved rewarding to me.  Yoga did not.  However, many of my friends, male and female, find Yoga to be beneficial both physically and spiritually.  I don't want to imply that Reiki, Tai Chi or Yoga are the only paths or types of pursuits that are worthy.  There are many, many others.  I just want to encourage you to investigate, pursue and, if enjoyable and beneficial, continue along that path.  Don't abandon your interests and passions believing that an exciting life is only meant for the young.
